A study of rhythm, colour and architecture along one of Amsterdam's historic canals.
Context
Rather than documenting every building faithfully, this illustration explores the visual rhythm created by Amsterdam's canal houses. Subtle variations in width, height, rooflines and colour create a streetscape where repetition and individuality coexist.
Colour
The colour palette was developed by observing the street itself, reducing its variety into a limited range that preserves the atmosphere of the place.
Small architectural variations transform a sequence of similar buildings into a distinctive urban landscape.
